Chatham County, North Carolina was established through legislation introduced on December 5, 1770 to the Colonial Assembly. Chatham County, with a population of 60,052 (Census 2006 est.), boasts 682.85 square miles of gentle southern weather with four distinct seasons. Chatham was named for the Earl of Chatham in England, the ever popular William Pitt.
