Rite Aid on Monday announced it is filing for bankruptcy for a second time, barely just seven months after the chain exited Chapter 11 and emerged as a private company. Rite Aid, one of the largest U.S. pharmacy retailers, has struggled in recent years due to high debt, inflationary pressures and increased competition. The company listed liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion in a Chapter 11 petition filed in New Jersey bankruptcy court.
As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, Rite Aid announced plans to close or sell all of its approximately 1,240 stores across 15 states. The company is also discontinuing its rewards program and will cease honoring gift cards and returns after June 5, 2025. Despite these challenges, Rite Aid aims to maintain pharmacy services during the transition and is in discussions with potential buyers to sell its pharmacy assets. This situation reflects broader difficulties in the retail pharmacy industry, where traditional business models are under pressure from changing consumer behaviors and increased competition.
