Spirit Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year. Sources say it is because of a combination of ongoing financial struggles and adverse market conditions. This follows their previous bankruptcy filing in late 2024, from which they emerged in March 2025. However the bankruptcy in August 2025 is mainly due to persistent financial difficulties, including excessive operating costs, mounting debt, and weak demand for domestic leisure travel, which persisted even after emerging from a previous bankruptcy earlier in the year.
Spirit struggled to control its cost structure, with operating expenses exceeding revenue by a significant margin expenses in the latest quarter were 118% of revenues. The airline reported a net loss of approximately $246 million just for the quarter ending June 2025, and carried long-term liabilities of $2.4 billion, most due by 2030.
Spirit's mounting debts and losses could no longer be ignored. More specifically, Spirit has not been profitable since 2019 and has continued to report significant net losses, with operating costs exceeding revenue. The airline has been burdened with high debt, and its previous restructuring only pushed back some of the debt due dates, leading to higher interest rates and a mounting financial turmoil.
Weak consumer demand for domestic travel was another factor plaguing Spirit airlines in 2025. The company has been impacted by low demand for domestic leisure travel, a market segment that is core to its business model. This has created a "challenging pricing environment" with increased competition from other airlines.
The company's goal with the new bankruptcy filing is to "properly and thoroughly" restructure the business, which may involve further cost-cutting, shrinking its fleet, and renegotiating contracts. Spirit has stated that it expects to continue normal flight operations during this process, and customers can still use their tickets, credits, and loyalty points. In summary, Spirit Airlines’ bankruptcy was primarily triggered by unresolved high operating costs, weak travel demand, and unsuccessful previous restructuring efforts, leaving the company unable to achieve financial stability in a competitive market.
