Smithfield, North Carolina is the county seat of Johnston County, NC and houses 12,271 people as of the latest estimate. Smithfield is located in the east-central portion in the coastal plain.

The daytime population of Smithfield increases as travelers and specific visitors stop on their way north and south on I-95, visiting the 80 plus outlet shops that Smithfield has to offer in its Carolina Premium Outlet Mall. Always growing, this center has an impressive collection of designer and manufacturer direct retail outlet stores. Some of the top “Key” stores include: Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, Carolina Pottery, Coach, Eddie Bauer, Gap Outlet, and Liz Claiborne. Of course, these shoppers also contribute to the customer base at Smithfield’s many eateries and standard retail offerings. The specialty retailer JR Discount is one of the largest distributors and retailers of brand name premium cigars in the United States.

Ava Gardner was a Smithfield native. The Academy Award nominated actress is listed as one of the American Film Institute's greatest stars of all time. She has the added distinction of being the wife of three legendary stars: Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra. She died in 1990 of a stroke suffered during a visit home, and is buried beside her parents, Jonah (1878-1938) and Mollie Gardner (1883-1943), and siblings at Sunset Memorial Park, in Smithfield. The Ava Gardner Museum is located in Smithfield at 325 East Market Street in the heart of downtown and is open daily.
